Regenerative Orthopedics Q & A

What is platelet-rich plasma therapy?

Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) therapy is a regenerative medicine technique that helps you heal specific joints and other conditions that cause chronic pain and keep you from functioning at your best. PRP contains a concentrated amount of platelets from your own blood. Platelets contain an amazing amount of growth factors that stimulate your body’s own internal healing processes.

Oral and injectable medications (such as cortisone shots) may reduce your pain, but they don’t do anything to heal your injured tissue. They can actually weaken the tissue and cause more damage over time. PRP not only reduces your pain levels but also stimulates healing. PRP injections are performed under ultrasound guidance.

What issues can be treated with PRP therapy?

PRP therapy works for a number of common joint issues. These include:

  • Arthritis
  • Tendonitis/tendonosis
  • Rotator cuff injuries
  • Tennis or golfer’s elbow
  • Ankle sprains
  • Back pain
  • Hip pain
  • Knee pain
  • Shoulder pain
  • Plantar fasciitis
  • AC joint instability

Research supports the ability of PRP to reduce pain and heal these conditions.PRP is also a valuable aesthetic treatment and pairs well with microneedling to boost your complexion.

Is there a long recovery from PRP injections?

The PRP injections take several weeks or months to work, and you may have some slight soreness and discomfort for up to a few days following treatment, but you definitely do not have downtime as you would with invasive surgery. You don’t have to compromise your movement any more than you already are due to your current pain.

What is stem cell therapy?

Stem cell therapy can treat many of the same conditions that PRP therapy does. Stem cells are unspecialized cells, and when sent to an injured or ill area, they morph to become the necessary cells needed for healing. Stem cell therapy is usually an option when you have a decreased amount of growth factors in your platelets that may make PRP therapy less effective. This might occur in people who are smokers, are older, or who have diabetes.

In most people, however, PRP therapy is the most cost-effective and expedient treatment.

When used in a medical setting, stem cells come from adult fat or bone marrow. Stem cells used at Ethos Integrative Medicine are harvested only from bone marrow.

Who are the best candidates for regenerative medicine therapy?

If you experience pain in your joints, PRP may be a good option. This is especially true if:

  • You do not want or did not respond well to cortisone or steroid injections
  • You were told to stop the activity you love because of pain
  • You want to stop taking pain medications
  • You were told you just needed “time off”

Like PRP, stem cells also have an aesthetic application. You can boost the appearance of your skin and promote growth of new, healthy tissue and cells with the application of stem cells during facial treatments.
