Sports Medicine Q & A

What is sports medicine?

Sports medicine is the area of medicine that focuses on treating sports-related injuries, or any type of injury that affects an athlete and his or her performance. It also focuses on rehabilitating an athlete following an injury to help ensure they can return to their sport or activity as soon as possible.

Many sports injuries occur as a result of overuse or repetitive stress that causes excessive strain on muscles, joints, ligaments and other structures. Since many sports place specific forces and strains on certain parts of the body, treating musculoskeletal injuries in athletes takes special skill to enable the treatment to be customized not only for the injury and the health of the patient but also for the activity itself.

What are some common sports injuries?

Sports injuries are usually strains or sprains which typically occur either as a result of a direct impact or indirect impact. Injuries related to repetitive impacts from jumping or running are also common. Some of the most common sports injuries affecting the feet and ankles include:

  • Sprains, injuries that affect the ligaments and which may include overstretching a ligament or complete or partial tears of a ligament
  • Strains, which involve injury to the tendons and muscles
  • Fractures, both simple and complex
  • Nerve injuries that can accompany direct and indirect impact-related injuries, causing pain, numbness, and other issues, and even affecting balance
  • Bruising of deep tissues
  • Heel spurs, small, bony projections that form on the bottom of the foot that often develop as a result of repeated impact

What is the approach to sports medicine at Ethos Integrative Medicine?

Prevention is the first step beginning with pre-season physicals and working closely with area athletic trainers, coaches, and other healthcare professionals. When an injury occurs, the team provides diagnosis and evaluation through in-office musculoskeletal ultrasound to quickly and accurately diagnose your injury.

Following your diagnosis, your dedicated physician will create a customized treatment plan using the latest non-surgical advancements in medicine and training. Once the injury has healed, the team at Ethos will work one-on-one with other trusted healthcare professionals, who understand the advanced medical protocols needed to monitor your individual progress.

In order to prevent other sports-related injuries, you should come into Ethos Integrative Medicine for a follow-up evaluation to ensure that your injury has healed properly without affecting your performance.

What if I’m not a student or professional athlete?

The team at Ethos Integrative Medicine can also help non-athletes and are excellent resources for the individual who wishes to become active or begin an exercise program. For the "weekend warrior" who experiences an injury, the same expertise used for the competitive athlete can be applied to speed the return to full function as quickly and safely as possible.
